As any major honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
