Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
